It really seemed that as one problem ended, another came to replace it. Only…the new problem was at least ten times worse than the first. At least, that was what was going through my mind as I closed the large oaken door behind me as Astrid and I entered my home in the village of Berk. Sounds pretty negative right? Well there are not many people who have gone through what I've been forced to endure the past few days.
So, naturally, I felt a small tremor of anxiety rush up my spine as my father stared us both down, and something told me that by the look in his eye…something was up. I opened my mouth to speak, but Astrid began before the words could leave my mouth, "...So, is there something up?"
Dad blinked, and hesitated for a moment as Astrid smiled. Apparently she had hit the nail squarely on the head. Something was up. Dad coughed, speaking as he grabbed a scroll from the table behind him and spread it onto the one in front of us, "Err, yes…There is something up. Something none of us ever could have predicted." I couldn't help but try and see if I could read some words on the parchment that Dad happened to be covering with his knuckles, but I didn't have much time to look before he began to speak again,
"All the Vikings in the area haven't suffered from the theft of livestock or have had to be in any fear of danger from dragons ever since you, Hiccup, and your dragon defeated that monster that was controlling all of the others." I nodded weakly, blinking as thoughts of the past week or so flooded back.
I had lost part of my left leg because of that awful beast, but if it wasn't for Toothless saving me, I probably would have died anyway. Now I supposed that it would be better to have lost a limb than be crushed to death by the biggest dragon to have ever lived. But now, it was dead….however, I had the worst feeling that Dad was about to tell Astrid and I something that would wipe away all of our efforts, and simply bring on a new challenge for us to face.
Dad pressed his forefingers against his forehead for a moment before gesturing at the paper, not even bothering to look at it as he shook his head wearily, "Unfortunately….the thefts of livestock are occurring again." I jumped, my eyes widening with shock. However, Dad continued before Astrid or I could yell out in protest, "It's not being caused by our dragon friends Hiccup. I know what you were going to say, but it isn't…because the beast has already been spotted."
Astrid frowned, leaning over the table and pointing at the image of a shadowy figure that had been hastily sketched onto the parchment, "So…is the thing we're dealing with here a dragon…or not..?" Dad chuckled grimly, "Oh ho, it's a dragon alright, but none of the likes that you or I have ever seen!" Astrid and I watched as Dad opened the scroll of paper further, revealing a column of written text about the mysterious dragon.
The image drawn on the paper seemed to be only the silhouette of the beast, but by the looks of its figure it was unmistakable as a dragon. It was massive, and it was a new species to me for sure. There weren't an awful lot of things written about it, but there actually was more than had been written about the Nightfury before I had seen Toothless. It seemed to steal large quantities of livestock, not the one or two sheep that each dragon had taken from us at the time. It seemed to be capable of carrying several animals at once, but had never been seen clearly. Also….it had injured Vikings to the point of death.
I grimaced, holding the corner of the parchment down with a free hand as I gestured at the beasts' image in anger, "Well how come we haven't heard about this dragon yet if it's been almost killing people!?" Dad frowned sullenly and looked up at me, with the look of worry in his eyes, "The dragon has only been spotted once, twice maybe. We didn't want you kids rushing into a danger that we aren't even sure about yet."
I frowned, glaring at the image again, "You knew nothing about Nightfuries and that didn't stop me…" Dad frowned sadly, and didn't respond, pointing to the image of the dragon once more, as well as its name, as he looked up at Astrid, "….For now, we're calling this dragon… 'The Deathbringer'."
Astrid rolled her eyes, sighing heavily, "Well that's very optimistic..." Dad folded the paper and put it back onto the table behind him, turning back to face Astrid and I. I glanced over at Astrid a moment before Dad began to speak again. By looking at her she didn't seem to be too worried about this new dragon threat. Even the very look on her face was confident….but when she looked at me, her eyes betrayed a hidden worry. It was probably something that she hoped I hadn't seen, because she frowned slightly at me, and then turned away as Dad began addressing us once more,
"I called both of you here for two reasons. One was to explain the situation and give you a small insight on the dragon. And two…" Dad's next words actually surprised me a little, "We're going to try and hunt down this dragon, and since you seem to have a way with the beasts….Hiccup, I'm trusting that you can attempt to tame the dragon."
I blinked hard, and just stared at Dad for a long time. Sure it was one thing for me to gain the trust of Toothless, and manage to get all the other dragons that had recently stolen from our village to trust us Vikings….but that was only because they were forced to steal from us, and welcomed the peace. For if they hadn't brought food to the mother dragon, it would have eaten them instead, it's only other immediate food source apparently.
So I put my thoughts into my voice as I answered hesitantly, "But….the dragons were being controlled by that other dragon. If this dragon is stealing and trying to kill people by itself…who knows how big it is! It might be ten times the size of that other dragon, and was just waiting for it to die so it could take its place!!" Dad frowned, and murmured, placing his large hand somewhat gently on my shoulder, "Aye that might be true….but I have faith in you son. I know what you're capable of. You possess something that none of us Vikings have ever had before! It may not be strength….or power…" I frowned hard, "Thanks for summing that up."
Dad sighed and continued, "…but you're smart Hiccup. And you have a way with dragons. If anyone can tame this one, it's you." Astrid smiled, punching me lightly on the shoulder as she laughed, "Plus, we're Vikings remember?! Danger is something we live for, right?" I ran my fingers through my hair as I groaned, "Yea maybe for you…"
Dad chuckled and smiled warmly at us both, "I trust in both of you. The other Vikings along with the dragons are going to help us search for the dragon. And then, once we find it, it's up to you Hiccup to try and calm it." I groaned, "Leave it up to me to save the day…again." Astrid grabbed me by the arm and helped me turn around, both her and I beginning to make our way back out of the house, "Come off it Hiccup, if Toothless hadn't been there you know you would have been toast."
I sighed and smiled a little, watching the moonlight glint off of the metallic prosthetic that Gobber had fashioned for me, "Yea yea, don't remind me…"

I chuckled softly as Toothless licked my face happily as Astrid and I parted, she running off to get her weapon and her own dragon, the Deadly Nadder, and then meet up with the other guys. I was told to hang back a little and take things easy, on account of my leg. It was always 'Hiccup take it slow' or 'make sure you don't put too much strain on your leg'. Though, having a replacement and now that everyone knew about Toothless, AND since he helped me save everyone from the dragon, I'm probably more talked to or about now than I was when I was excelling through dragon training…err…with Toothless' help of course.
I patted the black dragon's side gently as I whispered to him, "Now let's check that tail of yours…make sure everything's all ready for flight…" I made my way down Toothless' length and lifted his massive tail, inspecting the replaced fin on the left side.
Truth be told, when I had first shot Toothless down from the sky with my catapult contraption, I had handicapped him severely. Without that left tail fin, he was hopeless and could no longer fly. It was a funny thing in a way…Toothless was missing a tail fin, and I was missing a leg…both on the left side. Toothless needed my help to fly, and I needed his help getting around since I was still trying to get used to walking on the metal rod I now had for a foot. We completed each other now.
The red fin seemed to be totally intact. The first, original had been burned in that massive fireball that was caused when that dragon was felled, but this new one seemed to be twice as good as the rickety thing I had constructed. It would do the job at least, and keep both me and my dragon aloft.
As I made my way back to his side, I felt Toothless' head press against me as he helped push me onto his back, my prosthetic fitting snugly in the stirrup of the saddle that I had created in Gobber's forge. I grunted as I pulled the rest of my weight over Toothless' side, patting his nose as he went to push me all the way, "It's alright bud. I think I've got it the rest of the way."
He didn't seem to be too convinced as he stared at me with his massive eyes for a few moments, and then turned back and faced the village. I stared at my left leg a moment, murmuring, Toothless' ears flicking as he listened to me intently, "Hm…I did tell Gobber I was going to make some improvements on this thing….maybe I'll get around to it someday.
My body stiffened as suddenly, I felt Toothless tremble beneath me as he shook his entire length, from the tips of his claws to his tail. His jaws parted in a low screech of happiness as I scratched behind his ears fondly, "Alright, we best be off now. The others will probably wonder if we don't catch up with them soon." I couldn't help but sigh shakily with anxiety as I pressed the heel of my prosthetic down, signaling Toothless to take flight as I moved his tail fin.
He took off into the night sky with a massive rush of air as I thought to myself, what am I getting myself into…?

Remember when I said that seven months out of the year it snows in Berk and then it hails the other three?
…..This happened to be one of those three months.
I used my forearm to shield my face as Toothless and I were pelted with sheets of hail as he soared through the clouded sky. Thankfully, the hail was small and melted on contact with any solid surface, for now anyway. Hopefully, the weather would stay pretty much like this until we could find somewhere to land, or maybe improve even. If you take our amount of luck into consideration, most likely the latter wouldn't occur.
I felt Toothless shiver beneath me as he beat his wings hard, trying to fly against the furious gale that was trying to throw us into the never-ending expanse of the sky. It made it worse that it was nighttime, and we didn't even have the stars to guide us. There was absolutely no win-win situation here as Toothless fought to fly against the elements.
I was forced to press my body closer to his back as he began to fly harder, the small bits of hail beginning to sting as they struck my face and bare hands. I listened to the shrill whistle of the wind and the never ending rhythmic sound of my Nightfury's beating wings as we pressed on, but the weather seemed to only get worse the farther we went. I had no way of knowing if we were even going the right way anymore, but it was too late to think about that.
For about a half hour we flew this way, and by now I could sense that the conditions were taking a toll on Toothless. His breath came in ragged pants, and his wings had to beat twice as hard and fast than they normally would to compensate for the wind trying to drive him back, not to mention he was making sure to keep level so he didn't accidentally throw me off in flight. I knew that we would have to land somewhere soon, or that could lead to real trouble for the both of us. However, considering that visibility was next to nothing, and I could no longer bare my face against the wind because the hail was becoming larger, I was forced to keep my face pressed into Toothless' scales, to prevent from losing an eye to the massive chunks of ice at least.
Then suddenly, I felt my blood run cold as Toothless lurched violently in flight, he seeming to be shocked by the occurrence, opening his maw in a soundless shriek of surprise. Quickly, I shielded my face as best I could so I could steal a glance behind me. To my utter dismay and horror, a massive gaping hole had been ripped into the replacement fin on Toothless' tail, and even now more hail was ripping holes into it.
I fought against every urge in my body to panic as Toothless shifted again in flight, banking an extremely hard left as the appendage was swiftly torn to tatters. I roared above the gale, knowing full and well that Toothless couldn't hear me, "Just hang on! We're going to make it!!!" I gritted my teeth and lowered my face again; afraid I would be impaled by the massive pieces of hail that were hurtling towards us now. Deep down I knew we weren't going to make it, but saying it out loud would make it even worse.
I let out a hoarse cry of agony as my fear was realized, and I was struck in the arm by a hurtling hunk of ice. Toothless perked and jumped violently as he heard me scream over the wind, and he roared with shock as his own body was tossed by the wind plus the ice that was hitting him as well. I gripped by shoulder tightly and covered my face again, only able to brace for impact as we both toppled from the heavens, pieces of red canvas tearing away from his replacement fin like fragile dandelion fluff.
I only remembered hearing the wind rush past my ears and feeling the bone jarring thud as we both crashed through the trees covered with ice, and then collided into the ground.

It seemed to be forever before I finally regained my consciousness, and even then I had absolutely no idea where I was, or any recollection of what had happened. I slowly lifted my head from the snow that I had been resting in, bits of ice falling from my hair as I pressed a hand against my face. I stiffened, afraid to move any more in fear that I may have sustained a neck injury or worse.
I had been thrown from Toothless into the trees, and he had landed a good several yards away, toppling several trees in his wake as he had connected with the earth. Though I didn't see him lying in the massive trough he had created, but actually he was standing a bit closer to me. He lifted his head when he realized that I had awoken, and quickly trotted over to me, licking my face with his warm tongue. He nuzzled me as I weakly scanned his body, and thankfully he had fallen with the snow cushioning him, sustaining no visible injuries except for a few scrapes and probably a bunch of bruises, and of course the demolished tail fin.
I hugged his neck weakly and murmured to him, using his body as something to lean against as I tried to conserve my strength, "….we're….gonna have to make you a new tail fin if we're going to be going…a-anywhere…." Well, it could have been worse. I could be dead. We both could be dead. And thankfully, we weren't.
I did feel pain though. Horrible pain, excruciating pain, but I couldn't figure out where it was coming from. I was still dazed, and everything about me seemed to be a blur. The first thing I realized that was causing the pain was my shoulder. I touched my right shoulder gingerly, and then looked at my hand to see it covered with crimson. I grimaced as I realized that the ice had torn completely through my shirt and gouged into my shoulder, but had long since melted, leaving a wound that was just now beginning to stop bleeding.
It also occurred to me that something was horribly wrong when I could see that the snow around my body was tinged with dark red, and Toothless was nudging my leg that was half buried in his snow with his snout. …not good.
Frantically I dug at the snow encasing my leg, and of course it had to be my injured one. The prosthetic had become infused with ice, rocks, and clumps of dirt when I had slammed into the ground upon leaving Toothless' back. It had also somehow detached from my leg, and the point where my leg had been severed that was still healing up had begun bleeding again. Upon simply seeing my leg, mangled as it really was and without the replacement, I felt tears burn my eyes.
I felt my body tremble as I became succumb to sobs as the agony in my combined wounds of my arm and leg became too great for me to overcome. I let out an involuntary cry of pain as I doubled over the stump of a leg I had left, gritting my teeth and balling my fists in a feeble attempt to hush my crying. I screaming my head off seemed to make it worse as my entire body felt like it was throbbing.
My body went cold all of a sudden and I felt the edges of my vision go to black as I almost began to pass out again, but Toothless was there, and caught me in the crook where his neck met his wings. He stretched his neck and curled his body around me, wrapping his tail around and holding his wings over my head to protect me as best as he could from the hail. Leave it to Toothless to protect me and make sure I was safe. …again.
I felt quite silly lying there in the massive, encasing claws of a dragon as I cried, tears rushing down my face, but at the time I could really care less. All I REALLY cared about was for the unbearable pain to stop. My metal replacement leg was lying beside me in the snow, but until the pain stopped I had no plans on reattaching the thing. Toothless gently licked the top of my head, holding me close to himself as a low rumble erupted from his throat, he doing his best to soothe my pains.
I looked at the side of the dragon's face as I whimpered my crying reducing to hyperventilation and controlled panic as I looked into his massive eye that had me locked in its gaze. Once again, we Vikings had been proved utterly wrong about our assumption on how dragons behaved and thought. They were compassionate, protective, and willing to risk their lives for another. If Toothless wasn't an example of that, then I don't know what is.
Even now, Toothless extended his head once more and licked the tears and dirt from my cheeks, his warm tongue caressing my face actually causing me to smile a bit. The pain was easing off, but I wouldn't be able to walk any distance, if even stand on my own at all. I rested my face against Toothless' muzzle as we both laid there together in the snow and ice, the storm actually calming down a bit, resulting in a light fall of snowflakes. Quite a difference between the scene that had occurred in the sky a few hours prior.
We lied there for a while until I was sure that I would be able to move a little without being caused a great amount of pain. The shoulder I could deal with, but my leg was a horrific pain that's hard to imagine. One look from Toothless and I knew that he wasn't about to let me try and stand up on it on my own, and I silently agreed with him. So, without protesting, I wrapped my arms weakly around my Nightfury's neck, and he gently lifted me from the snow to his back, setting me back onto the saddle that had somehow remained strapped to his back. My injured leg dangled limply, useless, on Toothless' side, and without me even having to ask, he gently clamped the prosthetic in his teeth and placed it on the saddle in front of me.
Then, he walked, carrying me and my injured self on his back into the massive forest of ice. We had no way of knowing where we were going, where we would end up, or even if we would see Berk again. The mysterious dragon didn't seem to matter to me anymore. I know it should have, but it didn't. The only thing I cared about now was getting my dragon and I somewhere safe, alive and intact….for the most part at least. I owed it to Toothless to make sure that no harm came to him, no matter the cost to my own self.
Now I knew that I was extremely fortunate to have a dragon like Toothless on my side. I mean, he trusted me and believed that I was capable of doing things I never knew I could. If anything, that means something to me when someone, dragon or otherwise, thinks of me like that. Toothless was my best friend, family now even, and I couldn't turn back on him, just as he couldn't turn away from me.
I needed him, and he needed me. And as Toothless carried me through the desolate forest, I couldn't help but think as I fell asleep on his back, that he and I would be stuck together for life.

Thankfully for the both of us, the hail remained to a minimum and didn't start driving hard again like it had before. We were just unfortunate enough to be stuck in the sky when the hail was at its worse. What else could go wrong? ….well those could be my famous last words.
I'm not exactly sure how long I had slept, but I just knew that we had traveled a good distance when I did finally wake up. The pain in my leg and shoulder had numbed because of the bitter cold, and had reduced to a dull throb. Still painful of course, but it wasn't something I couldn't handle. I mean, loosing the leg was the worst pain I had ever experienced to begin with, and I doubt I'll ever feel anything that painful again. At least…I hope I don't. At least I knew for now that if we somehow happened to stumble across any wild beasts or even the dragon we had set out to search for in the first place, I'd have Toothless to protect me. Too bad he couldn't fly.
I blinked hard, my vision a murky blur as I tried to regain my senses. I felt Toothless stir a little bit when he felt me shift on his back as I woke up. He continued walking at a slow, labored pace, his feet gouging out trenches in the snow as he dragged them along, his tail limply dragging in his wake as well. I knew that the loss of his own prosthetic was probably causing him pain, but if so he wasn't showing it. Sooner or later though, the cold and the pain would take a toll, but for now he was pressing on and simply making sure he could get me somewhere safe for the night at least.
I looked up into the large expanse of dark forest ahead of us. Nothing but wood, snow, and ice. It seemed hopeless that we would find our way out in the dark of night, much less find the others or Berk again. I trusted Toothless and his instincts, as well as his sense of direction. He and all the other dragons had the ability to locate their nest, so I figured that it wouldn't be a strange thing for Toothless to be able to locate Berk either.
Still, it was only a theory.
I rubbed Toothless on the back of his head gently as he walked, trying to calm both our nerves. I stole a glance behind myself out of anxiety. In this dark forest, with black trees dotted with snow surrounding us, you would feel as if something was watching you around every corner. The trees, with their long arm like branches reaching up to touch the sky, looked like ghouls just waiting for us to lower our guard so they could spring from the shadows and attack. Imaginary dragons and beasts of every horror seemed to be lurking in the darkness, watching our every move as we made our way through, trespassing on their land.
I gently patted Toothless' neck, speaking to him for the first time since we had crashed, "Stop for a minute buddy...I better try and reattach my prosthetic before the pain returns." Toothless let out a low, throaty growl as a warning, not wanting me to try and walk. I patted him again gently, and pulled my good leg around from the other side of his body, "Don't worry…I'll be alright." Toothless hesitated, but after a moment he reluctantly gave in, stopping and lowering his belly to the ground so I could dismount.
As I slid from his back, I hit the snow and sank several feet unexpectedly. It caught me way off guard, causing me to tumble and fall onto my chest into the white power. Toothless let out a shriek, but I quickly raised myself up, trembling from the cold, "No, it's ok! I'm fine!" He lowered his head a little, but continued to watch me with an unwavering gaze as I managed to turn myself over, sitting sunk in what seemed to be at least four or five feet of snow if not more, though I had to balance myself just right to keep from sinking all the way. Toothless rolled onto his side slightly so the metal replacement slipped from the saddle and fell into the snow beside me with a dull 'thunk', sinking a few inches into the ice.
I reached into my pocket and pulled out a rag that I used normally to clean myself up when working with Gobber at the forge. Thankfully now though, it was fairly clean, and shouldn't cause any infection to my leg. I simply looked at my leg for a moment, and tried to figure out in my mind the best way I could put it back on, at least until I could get back to Berk and get Gobber to help me. That is, if we made it back to Berk. I grimaced and picked up the prosthetic, wiping snow off of its surface and pulling loose pebbles from nooks that they had become lodged in.
Then a thought hit me.
I groaned with anger and dropped the prosthetic back into the snow, with Toothless perking a little and staring at me curiously. I growled aloud to myself, "This isn't going to work! The snow….it's too deep, and this…this dumb replacement will just sink down into the snow…." I looked at my good leg. …it wasn't exactly good at staying on top of snow this deep either, but at least I was used to adjusting pressure on it so I didn't sink up to my neck in an unexpected snow drift. I thought of the only next best thing I could do to, and took the metal rod that I now used for a leg back in my hand. Using some rope that I kept with me incase something on the saddle I used for Toothless broke, I tied the cloth over the bottom of the 'foot', winding some more twine around it so it would act as a snow shoe. Then, I tied the prosthetic as best as I possibly could to my leg.
It was painful, and probably wouldn't stay for more than a few steps, but would do if I was in an emergency. I looked at Toothless, and smiled weakly, "…what do you think..? Should work for now right?" Toothless cocked his head and stared at my leg a moment. We both knew it was really a pathetic job of patching it together, but Toothless looked at me with that goofy 'grin' of his and growled softly. It would work for now.
As I made to push myself up so I could get back onto Toothless so we could continue making our way through the forest, I saw the muscles I his shoulders and flanks suddenly ripple as they stiffened. I looked up, and saw his massive eyes look at me, then over my shoulder, and back at me again. I frowned, and began to say something when suddenly, completely out of nowhere, he dove into the surrounding trees and disappeared, letting out a high pitched, ear splitting shriek.
And then I was alone.
My eyes widened as I hollered into the blizzard, "Toothless!!! Toothless come back!! What's wrong!!?" Nothing answered me but the shrill cry of the wind blasting over the tops of the trees, sometimes so strong that it stripped them free of small twigs. My brown, tousled hair was blown back from my face as I hollered again, my breath showing in a puff of steam that erupted from my mouth in a cloud of mist, "Toothless!!!" Tears welled in my eyes, and I was about to scream again when a light came on behind me. A very bright light. I panted and ignored it as I wailed again into the gale, "TOOTHLESS!!"
Pain unexpectedly erupted in my shoulder as I felt something grab onto it harshly. The shock was simply enough to cause me to fall backwards and pass out, staring off into the blackness as someone, or something, shook me violently. I moaned, "….T-…toothless….," one last time before I fell totally unconscious, feeling the warm blood begin to drip down my arm again from my wounded shoulder.

"Look Dad! I think he's coming to!"
How many times had I passed out that day..? I counted three, including the time I fell asleep on Toothless' back. The first thing I felt when I woke up this time however was utter terror. I couldn't believe that Toothless had left. He was gone.
I vaguely felt someone press a large hand against my cheek as my tears wet his hand. I heard a deep voice mutter, "The kid has a fever. Probably from being in this horrific cold for so long…"
I opened my eyes weakly to see two Vikings of all things standing over me. One was a large man with a deep black beard, and piercing brown eyes that were staring into my own. Standing along side him was a girl, with blonde hair like Astrid's, only it was long and curly and not pulled back into a braid. Plus, she wore a Viking helmet on her head, also unlike Astrid. Her hazel eyes looked into mine as the girl frowned, "…wonder where he's from..." I would have answered, but I was panting from the shock of seeing them hovering over me. Plus, I was crying silently due to the fact that Toothless had run off for no apparent reason.
The large man spotted tears rolling down my cheeks and he muttered, pulling a heavy cover up over me a bit more, "Come on now son, don't cry. Wherever you live, we'll be sure to get you back, aye that we will." I felt him press a hand against my cheek again reassuringly before he turned and stepped out of view. His daughter looked over her shoulder, watching him, "You know Dad, I think the boy's delirious. Cause….when we dragged him outta the snow I heard him muttering over and over, 'Toothless'. Don't know why, but…." I winced as she tapped my forehead with a finger, ".., maybe he fell on his head or something."
I frowned, and used the back of my hand to wipe tears from my face. I murmured, staring at the girl, "…My n-name's Hiccup." The girl smiled, "Ah, he can talk! Good to meet you then Hiccup. My name's Janek Rannveig, but you can call me Jan. My dad there is Alfgeir Rannveig." Jan smiled broadly and folded her arms across her chest as she addressed me.
I leaned up in the bed that they had placed me in, using both hands to wipe the rest of my tears from my face as I replied, "I….I uh….thank you for taking me into your home….Jan a-and Alfgeir…" Alfgeir laughed heartily, turning back to me from a desk he was facing a moment ago, "Oh it's no trouble Hiccup. We weren't going to see you freeze to death out there, and we also certainly wouldn't listen to you screaming into the forest all night!" The large Viking and his daughter laughed heartily together as I stared at them blankly.
I addressed Alfgeir, "Uhm…-"He suddenly interrupted me, as Janek pulled the covers from me gently, "What I would like to know is how you ended up with that there, boy." He pointed at my leg, shaking his head wearily, "No wonder you were screaming so loud. Though you're not a true Viking I suppose until you amass some battle scars, or loose an arm or a leg aye?" I frowned, and opened my mouth to respond when Janek chuckled, "How'd you loose it then? Get it ripped off by a Hideous Zippleback? Burned by a Monstrous Nightmare?" I frowned hard. Did these Vikings not know that the dragons were on our side now?
Then a thought came to me. I pointed at Alfgeir, frowning with concern, "Have…have any of you or the Vikings in the area been threatened by a dragon stealing and killing?" Alfgeir's expression changed immediately as he gritted his teeth, balling his massive hand into a fist, "The bloody beasts! We sure have, and it's getting worse by the day. Even as a Viking it makes me fear to leave my home each day." So that's why these two assumed a dragon had mangled my leg. Though would it be safe to explain that….I, I myself, had a Nightfury as one of my best friends!?
I also did get a revelation that cheered me up vast amounts. Toothless had been wise to run and hide, for these Vikings knew not of the nature of dragons. It hadn't been long since he and I faced the monstrous mother of all dragons, Green Death. So I suppose the news hadn't spread to where these Vikings lived….though naturally I wouldn't think it would have, since they seemed to live in the middle of absolute nowhere. Concerned, I questioned them again, "….err…not to change the subject but….why do you and Janek live out here in the forest?"
Alfgeir once again chuckled as he placed a hand on my uninjured left shoulder, "You see this is actually a village you're inside right now Hiccup. The closest village around is Berk, but we haven't heard much from them since this snow storm hasn't let up in days." I nodded slowly, and then looked over as Janek lifted a weapon from the corner of the hut, a spear or javelin by the looks of it, "Don't know about you Hiccup, but if a dragon had taken my leg like that, I'd be making sure its head was mounted over my fireplace! No beast would be able to maim me like that and get away with it!!" I winced as she ran her hand down the fearsome weapon with a chuckle. I would have to explain the past few weeks' events to them before this village got themselves into serious trouble with the dragons.
I cleared my throat a little, and then looked at them both, frowning, "…M-…May I tell you guys something?" Alfgeir gestured to me with a hand, smiling, "Go on Hiccup, you're among friends here." I blinked, and then shifted on the bed a little. Then I began, "…Y…You both are going to think I'm crazy for telling you this…but uh…," Janek frowned hard and looked at me intently, gripping her javelin tightly as I continued, ",…well uh….The Vikings in the village of Berk, along with myself…..well….we've befriended the dragons." I gestured towards myself, "We all have dragons of our own….and my dragon is a Nightfury. I lost my leg when he saved me from falling to my death when we battled the Green Death, the mother of all the dragons, a few weeks ago."
Alfgeir and Janek stared at me with wide eyes and Janek with an open mouth. She glanced sideways at her father and muttered, "…I think he did hit his head." I frowned hard and protested, "I'm serious! What I tell you is true!!" Alfgeir frowned sadly and interrupted me, "Look…Hiccup….Being lost out in this blizzard is disorienting, and I understand that you also probably hit your head at some point due to a fall or something. So t-"
I roared back at Alfgeir before he could finish, throwing the covers off of my legs as I turned and dangled them over the side of the bed, "I'm not crazy and I didn't hit my head! I'll prove it to you!!" Before either of them could move, I pushed myself down from the bed, but felt unexpected pressure when I landed on my good leg and my prosthetic, and the feeling was so shocking that I slipped and fell on one knee. Alfgeir grabbed me roughly by the shoulder, "That's enough of that Hiccup!" I tried to pull away and get to the door, but Janek blocked my way as Alfgeir pulled me back. "Toothless!!!" I hollered hopelessly as Alfgeir roared, "This is nonsense! You're hurting yourself over a fantasy!" ……it was no fantasy.
Janek suddenly let out a shriek as the door to the hut was demolished, splinters flying every which way. She ran over to her father and he let me go as suddenly, in a mind numbing blur, Toothless forced his way into the hut with a horrific screech of rage, his tail lashing and knocking things every which way. He jumped past me and placed himself between me and the two, snarling and bearing his fangs in their faces. Alfgeir roared, "It's a Nightfury!!"
In a panic, I noticed that Janek was brandishing her spear at Toothless, and in turn, it looked as if she was going to hurl it at me. Quickly, I yelled at her, "Janek! Drop your spear!!" Instantly she did as she was bid, the weapon clattering to the floor. Almost at once, Toothless' ears perked as he watched the weapon fall, but he raised his gaze back to them, a low growl rumbling from his throat. I weakly pulled myself to my good foot, leaning on Toothless' side as I made my way to his head, resting a hand on the side of his jaws. I looked back at Janek and Alfgeir and winced weakly, "….Toothless…this is Janek and Alfgeir. They're friends, like Astrid."
Instantly, Toothless lowered his body and sat down with a thud that caused the house to vibrate on its foundation. He folded his massive wings against his body and looked at the two Vikings, licking my hair once, extremely happy to see that I was ok. Janek and Alfgeir stared at Toothless with awe and horror as I scratched him beneath his jaw, and he fell onto his stomach, rolling onto his side. He growled happily as I scratched him and rubbed him down, his eyes closed with contentment.
For a while the two couldn't speak until I broke the silence, looking up with a smile, "….now do you believe me?" Alfgeir shook his head, "…Well I'll be…..you've got some real explaining to do Hiccup."
And thus I began to tell them the entire story of what had happened, from beginning to very end.

"So now, Toothless and I go everywhere together….and we ended up here because the hail tore up his replacement tail fin, as I told you before."
Alfgeir nodded solemnly and looked at Janek, who looked humiliated because before she had been speaking of murdering dragons, "…You are right. Everything we thought about dragons at first was wrong. And…" He looked at Toothless, who was curled up about me, nuzzling me gently, "…well, your Nightfury is an example of that if I ever saw one. Who knew someone like you could train one of the most fearsome dragons of them all!" I nodded with a small smile, "…Well, it felt like Toothless decided on his own to trust me. I probably couldn't exactly train him if I wanted to….but….I'm glad we're together now." Alfgeir nodded in agreement.
Janek looked up at me with a small smile, "…We have the tools here you'd need to repair Toothless' tail fin so you can be on your way. And….sorry about the comments about dragons before…" I laughed, "Maybe you should be apologizing to Toothless instead." She looked over at my massive dragon weakly. Toothless looked up and fixed her in his large eyes, his ears flicking a little. She murmured, "…I…I'm sorry drago-…..Toothless." Unexpectedly, Toothless leaned forwards and licked Janek's face, nudging her a little with the end of his snout as if to say 'thank you'. Janek couldn't help but smile, and hesitantly, she petted the side of Toothless' neck. He craned his neck and turned his head as she patted him.
With a smile I left the two to work on getting together a replacement fin that I could fit to Toothless long enough for us to go back to Berk. Alfgeir was happy to oblige and helped me, and in no time we had a sturdy fin to replace the old one. It would last at least, and I was pretty pleased with it.
As I fitted it to Toothless' tail when we all exited the hut, Alfgeir addressed me, "You be careful Hiccup. That dragon is still out there…and who knows where it might be." I looked up and touched my bandaged arm, and then looked at my leg that was starting to pain me again. Reassured with Toothless by my side I replied, "...Don't worry about me sir. I think we'll be alright." Janek smiled and patted Toothless on the nose one last time, "Stay safe you two! The other villagers were probably listening to our conversation as they do most of the time, so you don't need to worry about being seen. We'll spread the word about dragons!!"
Happily, Toothless nuzzled Janek, who hugged his neck gently. I smiled as I pulled myself onto Toothless' back, not objecting to Alfgeir helping by pushing me up, "Who knows Janek…I bet you will find a dragon of your own one day." She smiled back at me and chuckled, "Now that would be something, wouldn't it?" I nodded and rubbed Toothless as I adjusted myself in his saddle. "Well…we better head off then. Keep in touch, and come visit Berk sometime!" Alfgeir waved at me with a hearty laugh, "Aye that we will! Good luck Hiccup and Toothless!!"
I grinned and murmured into Toothless' ear, "C'mon buddy…lets show them what real speed is like!" Toothless let out a loud shriek in reply, and before I could do anything else, he took off into the sky, elated to be able to fly again. I laughed and waved at Janek and Alfgeir below, who were getting smaller and smaller by the second. I could only just hear Janek laughing and see them wave back at me as we climbed higher and higher into the heavens.
I laughed aloud as Toothless picked up speed, and flew as fast as he possibly could. We would have to face the greatest danger ever in the next few days….but that didn't mean we would have to assume the worst in the beginning. Was I afraid to die…? …Well I don't know. It's hard to say when you've already escaped death once. If anything ever happened though, I knew that it would happen with those the closest to me by my side. As Toothless flew higher and higher into the sky, peaking in his flight, I looked over to see the massive full moon framing us. When the time came I knew I would be ready.
For now, I simply enjoyed the thrill of the flight. The flight, with my dragon.
EDIT: I noticed that DA didn't show my indents on my paragraphs |8( .... *sadface*

Short story, and How to Train your Dragon fanart at the same time :3

...no this probably will NOT be turned into a full blown fanfiction like SSH. ^^; Though if enough people like it I might finish the story and tell how or if they find the mysterious dragon xD

I have drawn some sketches of characters from the movie (Mainly dragons, but there are some sketches of Hiccup and Astrid as well ;) ) but I've been too lazy to scan them thus far XD I do plan on doing some actual drawn fanart for this movie though. It was too good not to <3

As you can see I'm currently fanspazzing over HTTYD, along with what seems to be like, half the population of people here on DA XD Though I'm proud to be one of the fans ^^ How to Train Your Dragon is the best animated movie I've seen this year, and will likely stay being the best X3

Short story blah, mostly practice ;)

Enjoy!~

HTTYD and chars(c)Dreamworks
Janek, Alfgeir, and story(c)Me

P.S. There are some grammatical errors here and there, I know xD Just ignore them. I was too lazy to go back through and find them all ^^; Also some of you may notice that the paragraphs are written differently here than in my other works ;D I actually indented paragraphs! *gasp*
